Ohio Krav Maga and Fitness (Class #2) Lewis Center

Round 2!! We're traveling across town to a different Ohio Krav Maga location. Krav Maga meaning "contact combat" or "close combat" teaches a set of skills that can be used in combative situations that can occur in real life, like getting jumped or getting a bar fight. We got a great deal from Groupon! Now if we're going to try out a gym we'd like to be fair and go at least more than one time so the Groupon deal worked out well. Not only did we try more than one class we also tried different locations since we both live on opposite ends of town. This review is of the 2nd class at the Lewis Center location. Check out the video and be sure to read our takes... we were so intense about the workout that we didn't film as much as we had liked! Oops!

Anita's Take:

Yikes, I feel bad we didn't have more footage!  Sorry!  You can probably tell that Courtney and I weren't in the best of moods, so we went to class ready to imagine a certain someone's face/groin to be punched/kicked.  Since it was our first Krav Maga class we arrived an hour early to learn basic moves.  The instructor talked a lot (prob 10 mins) about the history of it and I started to get a little bored. But after that, we learned some basic punches, kicks, elbow and kneeing moves.
Then the real class started.  We didn't get to stretch a lot, so make sure you stretch beforehand.  We only learned one self defense move, which was when someone gives you a headlock from behind.  The instructors did a good job demonstrating the moves.  I felt awkward pretending to punch Courtney in the balls and poking her eyes because I was afraid of actually hurting her.  The instructors walked around and watched us but didn't really correct anyone if they were doing it wrong.  Then we did some activities that really put us in "rage" mode and basically punch the $hit out of those black pads.  Overall, I was pretty exhausted and sweaty, so it was a good workout.  The instructors are really nice and so are the people.

Courtney's Take:

I'm not sure if Anita and I enjoyed this class so much because we experienced annoying ex syndrome before the class or because it was so much fun but I'd say it was a bit of both. This class was more focused on fighting and protecting yourself in real life situations. The instructor had all of us doing a lot of competitive drills which I loved! Make anything a competition and I will try like 10 times harder. We did some really fun drills that were competitions that were merely to get our heart rates up while other drills involved very physical interaction (like flipping each other over and poking one another's eyes out). My favorite drill was set up like so: One person with a hand held punching bag was the target, two defenders with large pads were in between you and the target. The defenders pushed you and tried to stop you from getting to the target while you rolled, dodged and out-smarted them to get to the target and punch their bag until time was called. Super intense and kept every one's heart rate up.

Ohio Krav Maga and Fitness: Class #1 (Gahanna)

Running, sit-ups, lunges sure sounds fun. Or it sounds like something we would attempt to avoid but we may have found our calling: kickboxing. I mean,  we may be the best fighters in Columbus. Krav Maga meaning "contact combat" or "close combat" teaches a set of skills that can be used in combative situations that can occur in real life, like getting jumped or getting a bar fight. We got a great deal from Groupon, only $30 for four classes, a personal training class and a free pair of boxing gloves (which Anita really needed). Now if we're going to try out a gym we'd like to be fair and go at least more than one time so the Groupon deal worked out well. Not only did we try more than one class we also tried different locations since we both live on opposite ends of town. This review is of the first class at the Gahanna location. Check out the video and watch yourself around Columbus because clearly we're born fighters.

Courtney's Take:

I really dig any kind of workout that's not a workout. So dancing, a sport and yes, kickboxing. I loved going to this class. It really was a kind of push yourself class. We did five non-stop five minute rounds. The first was a warm-up including push-ups, non-stop punching, kicks and so forth. The next three rounds were rotations from the hanging bags to the bags on the ground to wooden boxes. The bags were for punching or kicking to be performed standing or on the ground and the wooden boxes were for dips and push-ups. It was all about how hard you pushed yourself there were no set number of reps to do so I just tried to keep going and keep pushing as strong as I did at the start. This kind of exercising is great if you have a lot of frustration so I thought it wasn't just physically healthy but maybe got out some mental toxins I'd been harboring.

Anita's Take:

For me, the CardioMMA class was a little too easy for me.  I’d recommend it if you’re a beginner since they are not strict on perfecting a proper punch or kick, they just want you to work out.  I’d also recommend stretching beforehand since they didn’t include that in class.  There were people of all shapes, sizes, and ages in the class so you don’t feel intimidated at all.  The FREE boxing gloves that were included with our purchase from Groupon (worth $50 - Adidas gloves) were great and they have plenty of bags in their garage where we worked out.
